A Transparent Look into Cattle Farming

Meet the
CIBORO Family
Over the past 30 years, cow and calf farming has become a cornerstone of Québec’s livestock sector, known for producing high-quality animals that stand out in the marketplace. While Québec represents a smaller portion of Canada’s overall beef production—about 4% of the national total—it plays a leading role in veal, accounting for nearly 70% of Canadian production.
Québec also contributes significantly to commercial beef, with about 11% of the national supply coming from animals culled from dairy and cow-calf operations. Despite challenges such as the BSE crisis and difficult market conditions in the late 2000s, the province has shown strong resilience. Thanks to its abundant pastureland, quality forage, and experienced producers, Québec's beef sector continues to show solid growth potential.
Today, beef ranks as the fourth largest livestock sector in the province, following dairy, pork, and poultry. There are over 8,000 farms across Québec involved in cattle production—many of them family-run, operated by passionate men and women who prioritize animal health, food safety, and responsible farming practices.
Québec cattle producers have embraced modern, sustainable farming methods. Their focus on animal welfare, on-farm quality control, and environmental responsibility ensures the production of healthy, high-quality meat. Beef farming is more than just a business here—it’s a key contributor to local agriculture, regional development, and the province’s agri-food identity.
On average, more than 560,000 head of cattle are marketed annually in Québec, representing a farm-gate value of over $695 million. With deep roots in rural communities across the province, cattle production remains a vital part of Québec’s agricultural economy.
